Cautionary Tales of Two Wildlife Photographers

For the last thirty-two years, every spring I've traveled to the grizzlies' habitat in the northwestern United States and Canada, patiently waiting for an opportunity to photograph these dangerous and endangered bears. Each spring this becomes my passion. In early May, with my wife, Margita, we pack the essentials for an eleven-week journey out west. As many times as we make these trips, it never gets old.

We always look forward to our final destinations: Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks, and Banff and Jasper National Parks in the Canadians Rockies. Emerson once said, "Life is a journey, not a destination." But of course, we love our destination. There's never a guarantee you'll see a bear, and very seldom a wolf. We have been very fortunate, but we also have great patience. We often search and observe two or three weeks without seeing or filming any large animals, then in a certain serendipitous moment, we'll film something we were not expecting.

One time Margita and I were sitting in our SUV eating lunch, when about 200 yards ahead of us, about to cross the road, was what we thought was a coyote. Margita took the 750 binoculars and looked and said, "Bob, that’s not a coyote! It’s a lynx." We drove down the road to get a closer view and maybe a photo. I literally jumped out of the vehicle to film the lynx, but only filmed his behind and white bobbed tail. Margita murmured, "You messed up that opportunity." With the lynx still in my sight, I remarked, "There is an old adage: 'Curiosity killed the cat.'" The Canadian lynx ran up the small incline, made a left turn, and at about 40 yards, in full speed, glanced back, looking directly at me. I was able to get two beautiful shots with my Nikon D 7000. The lesson of this story is: never jump out of your vehicle, but also never give up.

Robert Gandy align= Margita Licis and Bob Gandy have traveled throughout the United States together for more than twenty-four years, with Bob traveling for over thirty-four years. The last twenty years, they've framed and sold many of their wildlife photos at art shows. Over the years, they have observed overzealous amateur and professional photographers, themselves included, guilty of doing the wrong things in terms of photographing wildlife. They learned from experience the "dos and don'ts" of wildlife photography. Although Margita and Bob are from Richmond, Virginia, they are passionately in love with the Great Plains and Rocky Mountains.

Bob, a graduate of the National Academy of Broadcasting, has written many radio commercials for local stations and short magazine articles about animals, with inspiration from Margita and his mother. Bob decided to take pen in hand and endeavor to write his first published book. Margita is a graduate of William and Mary College in Williamsburg, Virginia. With her love of geology and the beautiful landscapes of the west, she has helped Bob co-author this true-life observation of the flora and fauna of the American West.
