Oregon
A Photographic Journey

Fort Rock, a National Natural Landmark, is the remnant of an extinct volcano called a tuff ring. The name was derived from the towering rock ramparts that rise 325 feet above the sagebrush plains of the eastern Oregon high desert. Once a rich and plentiful marshland, the area was home to some of the earliest known human inhabitants on the continent. Woven sandals made by early Native Americans were found in a nearby cave and are dated at 9,000-13,000 years old, the oldest such artifacts yet discovered.

The landmark "White Stag" sign has displayed many names throughout the years, originally advertising "White Satin Sugar," to its longest-running version, "White Stag Sportswear," and then to "Made in Oregon." After the city of Portland took ownership in 2010, the lettering changed yet again to the sign seen now that welcomes visitors and workers to Portland's Old Town district. Also known as the "Portland Oregon" sign, this neon-and-incandescent-bulb icon was designated a City of Portland Historic Landmark in 1977.
