Storm Chasers!
On the Trail of Twisters

"Stop, Drop, and Run!

Tornado probes are devices that record information about what's happening inside a tornado. Researchers place them in the path of the tornado. Because of the flat, cone-like shape of the probes, the tornado winds cannot pick them up and blow them away. After the tornado has passed, the researchers pick up the probes.

Detailed video and weather instrument readings within a tornado may help scientists better understand how tornadoes form and evolve. Researchers have been trying to put probes into tornadoes since the 1980s, but it is a difficult mission. The characters in the movie Twister show this being done."
