by Lyle Manley

published by Lyle Manley through Sweetgrass Books

  • Filled with the hilarious musings of a playful boy growing up in the 1950s, Lyle Manley’s memoir Adventures of a Misfit: Coming of Age in the 50s and 60s is sure to delight anyone from the young to the young at heart. Manley recounts his escapades as a mischievous, graffiti-scribbling boy who moves from the Californian suburbs to the Wild West of Pony, Montana, and eventually to Bozeman, Montana. Whether dodging the gaze of meddling adults with his clan of cousins, facing the trials and tribulations of fitting in at a new school, or etching his ‘prose’ on any surface he can find, young Lyle’s adventures and misadventures are a nostalgic trip back to childhood and the mid-century West.

Lyle Manley’s birth, in 1950, in Bozeman, Montana, was planned by all involved parties except the author himself. Still bewildered, he was soon whisked away to mysterious southern California until 1959, when at the age of eight, his family returned to Montana. Lyle lived a life of juvenile delinquency in Bozeman and graduated from Great Falls High School in 1968. After self-imposed exile in Seattle, he again returned to Montana, graduating from the University of Montana in 1972. Surprising a large number of policemen, judges, teachers, and close relatives, he acquired a law degree there in 1979. Manley worked as a state lawyer in Helena until retiring in 2009. He lives in Helena with his wife, Anna Miller.
