  • The Smokies are where the wild things are - baby wild things! This collection of candid images by wildlife photographers Ann and Rob Simpson is devoted entirely to the area's junior residents, ranging from spotted fawns to red spotted newts, from furry bobcat kittens to downy owlets. Come along and witness these creatures at play, exploring the new world that surrounds them. The Simpsons always use ethical techniques when photographing baby animals.

Born Wild in the Smokies

"This wood thrush chick perches on the edge of its nest in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Most wood thrush nests are built in eastern hemlock trees, but since 2002, the park's hemlock trees have been under attach by an insect call the hemlock woolly adelgid. No one knows what will happen to wood thrushes if these insects destroy the vast stands of hemlocks."
-page 17

"River otters are one of the park's most playful and curious animals. Because of uncontrolled trapping for their pelts, river otters had not been seen in the park since 1931. In 1986, the National Park Service began a successful reintroduction program and today otters can be found in many areas of the park, including Little River, Cataloochee Creek, and Oconaluftee River."
