Wisconsin Barns
photography by Ernest J. Schweit
text by Nancy Schumm-Burgess
- Writer and historian Nancy Schumm-Burgess and photographer and journalist Ernest J. Schweit set out on a two-year quest to document Wisconsin's iconic barns, which have come to represent a way of life defined by family, a connection to the land, ingenuity, and hard work.
Schumm-Burgess digs up fascinating details on the backgrounds of the structures, including a rare log barn dating to the 1840s, a barn that once served as a stagecoach stop, and another designed by African American architect Algie Shivers.
Schweit's photographs capture the storied structures in all seasons, from modest mid-1800s barns to round and octagonal structures to grand, arch-roofed edifices.

Wisconsin Barns |
An avid history writer, Nancy Schumm-Burgess has been documenting and preserving barns since 1997. She works with local and national barn preservation organizations to protect this integral part of our agrarian heritage.
Ernest J. Schweit fell in love with rural America from the window of a train he rode to college in downstate Illinois. He saw a lonely beauty in the barns and farmhouses that would become his passion and favorite photographic subject. Schweit lives outside Chicago with his wife, three children, dog, and cat.
Praise for Wisconsin Barns:
"This book will be at home on a coffee table, but I recommend that rustic-road explorers keep a copy in the car. Schumm-Burgess offers insights and examples that will enhance and inform backroads wanderings from Superior to South Beloit. Schweit delivers a galley of exceptional images that capture barns as elements of a sweeping landscape. His willingness to move in close results in a treasury of weathered timbers, bailer-twine hinges, and barn-cat custodians. Go see then while you can."
-Gary Knowles, Dane County Lifestyles Magazine, June 2009
"The beautiful 80-page photo book...captures the architectural diversity, many moods, and lovely settings that define rural Wisconsin."
-Mary Bergin, the Wisconsin Leader-Telegram
"A delightful visual and informational treasure-trove."
-Audrey Kletscher Helbling, Minnesota Prairie Roots
