Montana's Mountain Ranges

Crazy Mountains

Nowhere else in Montana is the transition from prairie to mountains so dramatic. In a 20-mile span from the river bottoms of the Yellowstone to the pinnacle of 11,214' Crazy Peak, the terrain rises more than 7,000'. The Crazies are only about 30 miles deep and 15 miles across, but are the sentinel on the distant horizon seen from all points east.

They are the third-highest range in the state. The valleys of the Yellowstone and Shield rivers set them apart from the Absarokees to the south and the Bridgers to the west.
