"Located on the west side of San Juan Island in Lime Kiln State Park, Lime Kiln Lighthouse overlooks Haro Strait. The lighthouse began operating in 1914 and was automated in 1962. Since 1985, it has been dedicated as a base for scientists who study the movements and behavior of orca whales."

Gurche has won awards from the Roger Tory Peterson Institute and the Society of Professional Journalists.
