Montana Wildflowers

"Bitterroot, Lewisia rediviva, beside the Missouri River at the foot of the Big Belt Mountains. Bitterroot is called Lewisia rediviva because early botanists had a difficult time trying to preserve the plant for study. On his return trip in 1806, Meriwether Lewis dug up a plant and carefully labeled, pressed, and dried it. A year and 3,000 miles later, he presented it to botanists in Philadelphia. When they examined it, the bitterroot had begun to sprout! The name "Lewisia" is in honor of Captain Lewis and "rediviva" means "restored to life."

"Fuzzytongue penstemon, Penstemon eriantherus, mid-July, Garnet Range. Penstemons are showy flowers in an actively evolving genus. There are 30 different species in Montana, and some of them hybridize with each other and create chaos for taxonomists, whose challenging job it is to classify living things."
