Going to Yellowstone

Call the Plumber!

Yellowstone's water comes from rain (average 15.1 inches per year) and snow (average 72.1 inches per year). Rainwater and melted snow seep down through Yellowstone's rocks. When the water reaches the hot rocks beneath Yellowstone's surface, the water begins to heat.

The hot water rises up through a web of cracks in the rocks. This has been nicknamed "the plumbing system." Some water shoots straight through the plumbing system to the surface. Sometimes, however, the water is blocked for a while. Either way, when the hot water finally escapes, it creates one of Yellowstone's many thermal features.

Scientists have calculated that the water fueling these thermal features is hundreds of years old. This is because it takes a long time for the rain and meltwater to seep down into the earth.
