Last Tango in Melrose, Montana
The Writings of Dan Vichorek

"Eating wild mushrooms is probably the most fun you can have playing Russian roulette. If you try enough times you'll hit the loaded chamber. Don't serve mushrooms to the very old, the very young, or the otherwise unhealthy, unless you stand to collect their insurance."
-from "Mushroom Roulette"

"They say in Montana that if you've got enough rope, plenty of duct tape, and good clearance, you can do about anything. Good clearance means you can drive over a dogfight without bothering the dogs."
-from "Drivers of the Purple Gumbo"

"The way those pointy-toed boots were coming down on that floor, an extra fast snake with an urgent appointment couldn't have got across there without being trampled into mincemeat."
-from "Last Tango in Melrose, Montana"

Dan Vichorek align= Dan Vichorek was a journalist of exceptional talent who wrote eloquently about Montana's farmers, ranchers, and cowboys. When he died in 2001 at the age of 59, Dan Vichorek, former Marine and University of Montana journalism graduate, had been editor of UM's student newspaper the Montana Kaimin. He also reported for The Billings Gazette, the Chicago City News Bureau, Montana Magazine, and Fishing & Hunting News. He worked for five years for the National Park Service. He had lived with his family on a succession of ranches in southern Montana, where it is clear his childhood ambition was to earn enough money to buy .22 shells to shoot gophers.
